Aluminium wire / Arame de alumínio

  We found it… or maybe not. Finally we got aluminium wire from a hardware store, but after some tests we find out it cannot be the right one:  we twisted 2 wires of 2mm together and cover it with heat shrink tubing (used usually on electric wires) to give some more protection to snapping, after that did our 50 times bend/unbend test (like a knee when walking). It always broke after only 17 bends. When using a simple 2mm zinc wire it lasted easily more than 30 times, so this one is about 4 times less resistant.

Some more investigation on the internet provide us the answer:  this must be anodized aluminium wire and a basic rule tells us that the one we should be using is annealed aluminium wire. Well, back to quest.



  Encontramos… ou talvez não. Finalmente arranjamos arame de alumínio numa loja de ferragens, mas após alguns testes descobrimos que não pode ser o arame correcto: enrolamos dois arames de 2mm e cobrimos com manga retráctil (normalmente usada em cabos eléctricos) para dar proteger um pouco mais contra quebras, depois fizemos o nosso teste de 50 dobragens/desdobragens (como o joelho ao andar). Partiu sempre ao fim de apenas  17 dobragens . Quando usamos um único arame de zinco de 2mm durou facilmente mais de 30 dobragens, portanto este é cerca de 4 vezes menos resistente.

Algumas investigações extra na internet deram-nos a resposta: este deve ser arame de alumínio anodizado e uma regra básica diz-nos que devemos usar arame de alumínio recozido. Bem, de volta à procura.

  In my visit to the great people from the studio “Sardinha em Lata” they told us to get the wire from some garden store, apparently it is very used for bonsais. Well, it was a great advice because we got it already (5,5€ for 100g of 2mm wire, I think equivalent to more than 10 meters) and our tests show it resists more than 50 bends.  Thank you!

On the Internet, the best price we could find, including the shipment cost to Portugal, was in Animation Toolkit (http://www.animationtoolkit.co.uk), where 30m of 2mm wire cost around 13,6€ (with shipment).
